Soil tends to become compacted over time, as heavy rainfall and foot traffic push soil particles closer together. This compaction makes it difficult for moisture and essential gases to flow freely to the roots of your grass, leading to underdeveloped roots, weak grass, and reduced tolerance to diseases and drought.
Compacted soil can have serious repercussions for your lawn, but this issue can be effectively addressed through aeration.
We utilize professional grass aeration machines that traverse the lawn's surface, driving metal spikes (tines) 2-3 inches into the ground. This process creates hundreds of small holes, loosening the compacted soil. If needed, hollow tines can be employed to extract soil cores, which helps remove problematic thatch while also aerating the lawn.
Regular aeration is essential for promoting healthy grass root development.
Aeration can also alleviate waterlogging issues by creating holes that extend 4 inches deep, which can then be filled with sandy top dressing to serve as miniature ventilation shafts. This enhances the flow of air and water to the grass roots and helps prevent water damage.
Lawn aeration is best performed in the autumn, accompanied by an autumn feed to support root development. While your lawn may appear worse for a short time after aeration, this is only temporary. After a brief recovery period, your lawn should rebound, growing back stronger, healthier, and more vibrant than ever.
